Shaping Up Toe Puffs

I spent a little bit of time at the workshop yesterday shaping up the toe puffs on the wholecuts.

Here’s a photo showing the exaggerated lines of the toe puffs after they have be shaped.

Next step will be to re-last the toes and then it’ll be time to start sewing the welts on.

Get Off of My Cloud

Song a Week #11 is a cover of “Get Off of My Cloud” by the Rolling Stones.

While I was working on a big web development project this past week, I listened to all of the 60′s Rolling Stones albums, a bunch of which I had never heard, back to back. Thought about doing something off of The Stones psychedelic album, Their Satanic Majesties Request, but She’s A Rainbow would have been fairly tricky to pull off. So I went with the song they wrote as a follow-up hit to Satisfaction.

Instruments played were accordion, guitar, trumpet, and cuban tres.

Toe Puffs

I’ve been working on a huge PHP / MySQL job this week which has been taking up most of my time, but I did manage to make it over to the workshop yesterday to put toe puffs in place on the wholecuts.

Here’s another view.

Next step will be to shape them, but It’s doubtful I’ll get much more done on these this week.

Wholecuts Lasted

I actually had a productive afternoon in the workshop yesterday and the wholecuts have been lasted. I’m making this pair of shoes to test out a very unusual set of lasts from Fioretti, which are incredibly asymmetrical.

Full Bellows Tongue

I still need to take some nice photos of the boots before I send them out into the world, but before I get around to that I thought I’d post a photo concentrating on just the “full bellows tongue,” which is simply a tongue that’s attached all the way up to the top of a boot. It was surprisingly complicated to lay out the pattern for this. At some point I should try to explain the process I ended up using, but I first need to refine it a bit myself.

So what’s next… Remember these uppers? Hopefully I’ll have some time to last these Wholecuts later today.

Finished, but…

It’s been a busy week… and sadly not because of shoemaking. My “day job” had me dealing with Plesk, SSL Certificates, and Apache configuration files. I did manage to finish the boots though and will post some photos soon!

I was concerned that because of the full bellows tongue of the boots, the lasts were going to be a real struggle to remove, but the traditional method of using a hook and foot-strap worked beautifully. I think I’ll use this method on every pair of shoes I make for now on! It requires drilling a hole through the top of the last, which I have to say is a little unnerving.

Almost Done

The boots are nearly finished. Just a few more steps!
