“Toe Puff : A stiffening which is inserted beneath the upper and lining at the toe of the shoe. The purpose of this is to reproduce the shape of the toe of the last and to retain that shape throughout the life of the shoe.” – Manual of Shoemaking, Produced by the training department, Clarks.
The boots now have their toe puffs in place. They look like potatoes right now don’t they? Time for some shaping with a rasp.

I finally have some actual making to show. I lasted the boots yesterday.

I finished the insoles a while back for these and took a photo back then for some reason that I can’t remember. Perhaps to show off my favorite awl? Looks like it anyway.

Finished the insoles for the wholecuts last night while watching Better of Ted and Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town on TV.

After a week of fermentation and living mostly in the bathtub (precaution in case one of the bottles exploded…), the bottles have been moved out to our shed and are now resting upside down at around 50 degrees F (10 C). The plan currently is to try the “disgorgement” method to remove the sediment after a week or so.

I’ve noticed in the server usage logs for the blog that several people have ended up here while searching for information about casting heel blocks for shoes. The reason I’m guessing is that on the previous incarnation of the blog I had shown my process for casting my own heel blocks out of plastic. So in order to pass on this information, over the next few weeks I’ll repost it, and try to do a better job of explaining it this time around. To check it out, follow the “Casting Heel Blocks” link in the header.
