Meet the accordion you’ve been hearing in most of the “Song a Week” recordings.

This accordion is a family heirloom and originally belonged to my great-uncle Boleslav. While I know it’s not true, I would like to believe that when he came to America in the early 20th century, he arrived with the clothes he was wearing, $20 in his pocket, and this accordion!
Weighing in at 22 lbs (10 kg), this Piano accordion is polka machine.
Song a Week #14 is a cover of The Ghost In You by the Psychedelic Furs
Almost ready for use in a rom com montage and with an odd Bert Bacharach feel to it mostly because of the muted trumpet, the instruments I played this week are accordion, french horn, and several guitars, one with a Nashville tuning. I probably should have spent more time on the vocals, or raised the key a bit, but then again I’m trying to not obsess too much over these. Right?
Song a Week #12 is a cover of Bring On the Dancing Horses by Echo & The Bunnymen.
I’m back with another Song a Week after missing one, so I tried to make up for it by using more instruments than usual. In addition to accordion, guitar and trumpet, there’s french horn, banjo, cuban tres, and lap steel on this recording. I also tried a different way of recording the vocals, but I’m not sure it’s too much of an improvement.
Trivia: This song was originally recorded specifically for the John Hughes film Pretty in Pink.
Song a Week #11 is a cover of “Get Off of My Cloud” by the Rolling Stones.
While I was working on a big web development project this past week, I listened to all of the 60′s Rolling Stones albums, a bunch of which I had never heard, back to back. Thought about doing something off of The Stones psychedelic album, Their Satanic Majesties Request, but She’s A Rainbow would have been fairly tricky to pull off. So I went with the song they wrote as a follow-up hit to Satisfaction.
Instruments played were accordion, guitar, trumpet, and cuban tres.
Song a Week #10 is a cover of Pop Musik by M.
Instruments played where accordion, guitar, trumpet, harmonica and cuban tres.
Song a Week #8 is a cover of Laid by James.
Another week of accordion, trumpet and guitar, but with the return of the banjo.
Still haven’t figured out how to record decent sounding vocals yet with just plugging a mic into the back of the computer. I keep hoping to find the perfect set of effects to make it sound like I’m not singing in a cardboard box. The search goes on…
